Upgrading Dpm 2010 to Dpm 2012

In this article I am going to talk about how to upgrade dpm 2010 to dpm 2012 Beta. So this will be only giving you an idea for future updates

Here is the roadmap

1- Install  hotfix rollup package for System Center Data Protection Manager 2010      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2465832  if you have already installed on your system you can skip this step,

2-Update the Agents

3-Run the DPM 2012 setup

4-Update the agent

As you`ve seen that the process is pretty straight and easy

Let`s go to the first step

1- In order to upgrade DPM 2010 We will have to install  the hotfix rollup package for System Center Data Protection Manager 2010

Here is the Direct link  for DataProtectionManager2010-KB2465832.exe

Double Click on DataProtectionManager2010-KB2465832.exe and Click on Next

Accept the Agreement and Click on Install

Installation has been  kicked off

Click on Next

Click on Close

2-Now Dpm 2010 was opened and Go to management tab , and go to Agents. What we gonna do is here update the agents. Just Click on Update Available

Now it is upgrading the agents

Now we have completed the  hotfix rollup package for System Center Data Protection Manager 2010.

Step-3

Lunch the DPM 2012 Media and  Click on Next

Click on Check Install and Next Button will be available. then Click on Next

Select the Existing Path where the old DPM was installed. In this case mine is default

We are going to enter the DPM sql services password.

MS update  is optional.  This is a test environment so I selected NO, But in real life you should always select YES, Click on Next

Click on Remind me later, and Hit Upgrade

Upgrade has been kicked off, now time to have tea or miller time :)

Now we have a warning, We will need to restart the server.

After reboot the server DPM 2010 icon your desktop has been replaced and Become DPM 2012. Double click on DPM  2012 icon and upgrade has been taken place. Now we will upgrade the agents

4-Go to Management  and you will see the agents, and Click on Update Available

It is upgrading

The Agent upgrade has been completed.

We will go to each Protection group and verify the backup.

Let`s check if DPM  2012 Beta works, In order to check I select the Recovery tab and and I have a hyper-v protection group. As you know that we were not able to use Item-Level Recovery for VHD files which runs under virtual  DPM 2010 , Now one of the coolest feature of DPM 2012, We are able to browse hyper-V Vhd files that was backup under virtual DPM 2012

In this case I will browse my VHD file

Double Click  System reserved or Virtual machine  Volume

Here is the files. So we can use Item-Level Recovery on DPM 2012 which runs under hyper-v enviroment

One of the limitations has been resolved, It is really a great job.

Great article. Do you by any chance have any information if DPM 2012 can act as a secondary for DPM 2010? Any news on an approximate release date?

Thank you Miha, We don`t know when will be released , however this is DPM 2012, it should be released on this quarter.

Do you if pushing out the DPM 2012 Agents to all your protected servers will require me to reboot those servers.

After Rollup Dpm 2010 and 21012 versions do not require a reboot
